  1. 1927- . Polish politician, founder member of
  2. Solidarity, and Poland's first postwar
  3. noncommunist prime minister from 1989. A
  4. former member of the Polish parliament
  5. 1961-70, he was debarred from re-election by
  6. the authorities after investigating the
  7. police massacre of Gdansk strikers. He became
  8. legal adviser to Lech Walesa and, after a
  9. period of internment, edited the Solidarity
  10. newspaper Tygodnik Solidarnosc. In 1989 he
  11. became prime minister after the elections
  12. denied the communists their customary
  13. majority. A devout Catholic, he is a close
  14. friend of Pope John Paul II.
